Men's hair question. I have an oily scalp but dry hair, what is the best way to deal with this?

I used to cut my hair really short for years, so I'm really a little dumb when it comes to hair. Recently I just got tired of the short haircuts and I am trying something new out. My hair gets really curly once it grows out a little. I'm trying to make the most of this look. I want it to look natural and really curly. Sometimes because my hair tends to get dry, it gets a little stiff looking. The funny thing is I have oily skin and oily scalp, if only some of that oil would be on my hair and less on my face things would be perfect. I would appreciate getting answers from people that are pretty familiar with men's hair and can offer some good advice. Thanks.

I had the same exact problem!!! dry ends and oily scalp. Aussie makes a new shampoo that is a miracle for this dilema and it's cheap too!! It's called cleanse and mend. You can get it anywhere. But, i tried the conditioner that goes with it and it sucks and made my hair feel a little waxy. So stick with a good conditioner you like.

since your scalp is oil i would use a paul mitchell tea tree shampoo on you. that cleanse all impurity. then i would condition. just one squirt the hair with the teach tea trea conditioner. i would not rub it on the scalp. then rinse with luke warm water. dont use promenade styling product because they contain oil, dont use hair spray because they contain alcohol which try out the hair. bed head have some good product to use. there a product that call paste. you will use a drop in your hand and rub it together. it will look little but that is all you need for you head. best to do it when it is wet.

You can use Sea Breeze on your scalp only and that will help with the oil. Use a cotton ball and apply it right on your scalp. Use a oil base product on your hair, only your hair. Try not to get hair product on your scalp. I have been in this business for over 35 years and you are not the only man who has decided to make a change and has found it a little over whelming. Every once in awhile use a vinegar rinse. After shampooing rinse your hair in vinegar it will help to bring both scalp and hair to a natural PH balance. Do not do this right before a date you will smell like a Easter egg. It does work.

Good Luck

Oily skin, weather on the scalp, or on the face, is a problem in which the oil-producing glands are over active, so what do we do we do when we see lots of oil? we wash with soap (or in the scalps case, Shampoo, which is a detergent)... WRONG! That is the biggest mistake we could ever make! When we wash our face (or our scalp) with soap (detergent in the scalps case), we strip the skin of its moisture and nutients, and so our glands produce EVEN MORE oil to make up for it.

What we have to do is make our glands produce oil at a steady and slow rate, and if you wanted, even almost to the point where your skin stops producing oil altogether. How do we do that?

For the case of the face, wash the oil out (along with the dirt), and immediately moisturize your face with a lotion that has anitoxidants in it. Buy a face wash that is gentle, one without soap (soap is bad because it is a base, and your skin is naturally a little bit acidic. Soap is also bad because acne bacteria thrive easier in a less acidic invoronment, so, if you use a base, it will lower your acidic content, and can cause you to break out) and then get an extremely good moisturizer.

For the case of the scalp, get a Conditioner. Also, wear protective head coverings if you go out into the sun for more than an hour. The Sun will dry up your hair and your scalp will produce more sebum to make up for it. So keep your hair moisturized, and if you can, wear a hat or something.

Hope everything goes well!
